Canada to Kuwait power adapters - what adapter is needed for a Kuwaiti power outlet?

Kuwaiti power outlet

What adapter do I need for Kuwait?

You'll need to pack a Type G plug adapter for Kuwait if the plug you intend on using doesn't fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet.

The type of power adapter, power converter or charger that's needed when visiting Kuwait will all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're attempting to power with a Kuwaiti power outlet. If you don't know what voltage your device uses then read the section below about how can you tell if you have a dual voltage device before going any further.

  • If you are visiting Kuwait from the US then you will need to bring a suitable plug adapter to fit a US plug into a Kuwaiti power outlet. As the voltage is different in Kuwait use a power converter if your device or appliance isn't dual voltage and ensure that it can work with a 50hz power outlet.
  • If your device is 240 volts or is dual voltage and the plug can fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet then it will work in Kuwait.
  • If your device can run on 240 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet you'll need to bring a suitable plug adapter for Kuwait such a Type G plug adapter. A plug adapter for Kuwait (or power adapter) is designed to change the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in Kuwait, but won't convert the voltage from 240 volts to another voltage.
  • If your device doesn't run on 240 volts and isn't dual voltage you'll also need a power converter for Kuwait to convert the voltage from 240 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You'll still need to bring a suitable plug adapter for Kuwait if your power converter doesn't use the correct Type G plug adapter.
  • If you simply want to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or mobile phone then a USB travel power adapter will be more suited and it should be dual voltage, however ensure that you bring one which includes a Type G plug adapter otherwise you'll still need to bring along a suitable plug adapter for Kuwait[3]
  • Excessive use of a mobile phone during a trip can create an additional drain on the battery, it is practical to pack a power bank if you wish to keep your cellphone or other devices charged throughout the day whilst travelling to an unfamiliar country.

Warning: If your device won't handle 240 volts you run a risk of damage to your device, an electrical fire hazard or blowing a fuse. Before attempting to use your device in Kuwait read the instruction manual first to ensure safe operation.

What is the best power adapter for Kuwait?

What is a power adapter for a Kuwaiti power outlet?

Power adapters are small and lightweight plastic adapters which permit a Kuwaiti power outlet to accept a power plug from a different country. [5]

Will a power adapter change the voltage from a Kuwaiti power outlet?

A power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 240 volt Kuwaiti power outlet and can't convert to a different voltage. Should you need to safely use a 100, 110 or 120 volt device then you also need a step down power converter for Kuwait.

Do I need a plug adapter in Kuwait?

If the shape of the Kuwaiti power outlet isn't the same as the type of plug outlet in Kuwait then you will need a power adapter.

Kuwait

Do I need a plug adapter if I'm visiting Kuwait from Canada?

A Canadian plug won't physically fit into a Kuwaiti power outlet so you will need to bring a plug adapter for Kuwait, and because the voltage is different you will also need to use a power converter for Kuwait if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage to prevent damage or overheating.

Where to buy a power adapter for Kuwait in Canada

Kuwait to Canadian power adapters will most likely be available in most major Canadian International airports prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as Relay, The Source or 6&Sundry, but expect to pay more than regular prices. Airports will be your last chance to buy a power adapter before departure, always check the returns policy to ensure you can easily exchange or refund a faulty or unsuitable product in an airside shop.

It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot and other high street electrical stores normally sell a limited range of travel adapters to popular locations however for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online.

Travel USB Wall Chargers

USB chargers are useful when returning home

Travel USB Wall Chargers

Benefits of a travel USB wall charger

  • Ideal when you only have to power USB devices, for example cell phones, iPads or eReaders.
  • Instead of bringing multiple domestic USB power chargers travellers only need to pack one charger which costs roughly under C$20.
  • Chargers come with interchangeable heads which means they can be used in a large number of different countries. Interchangeable adapter heads supplied with travel USB wall chargers are typically small and lightweight which makes them easy to pack.
  • Offers surge protection.
  • The charger can still be functional domestically.
  • The swappable plugs will fit into Types A/B, E/F, G and I outlets so will work with a Kuwaiti power outlet.

Disadvantages of a travel USB wall charger

  • They only have USB outputs so you will be unable to power any appliances, only USB powered devices. [6]
Travel Power Strips

Power strips feature multiple USB ports

Travel Power Strips

Benefits of a travel power strip

  • A travel power strip is capable of powering several electronic appliances at once via a single plug socket, costing C$25-C$30.
  • Some models have voltage conversation for low wattage devices such as laptops. So therefore if the appliance isn't dual voltage it can still work with a Kuwaiti power outlet by using a travel power strip. This will make a travel power strip a cheap and lightweight substitute for a power converter.
  • Most power strips should include a number of USB charging ports.
  • The voltage from power outlets in certain countries could be unstable, a sudden surge in power will damage your delicate devices. There are some models that include a built in surge protector which will prevent your device from being overpowered by an unstable power grid.
  • When you get back home it will still be of use as a power strip and USB charger.
  • US and Canadian power strips include Type A, B, D, E/F, G, H, I, L and N plug adapters so should work in Kuwait.

Disadvantages of a travel power strip

  • The conversion on travel power strips won't work with high wattage appliances such as curling irons or hair dryers.
  • Due to the size of a travel power strip it might be too bulky for packing in hand luggage.
  • A travel power strip might be excessive if you only have a small number of appliances and devices to charge. [7]
Universal Travel Power Adapters

A universal travel adapter

Universal Travel Power Adapters

Benefits of a universal travel power adapter

  • Typical universal travel adapters will work in over 150 different countries.
  • An all-in-one design - lightweight and small for under C$30.
  • Some models will have USB charging ports built in.
  • Straightforward operation.
  • Some models will have a surge protector built in to protect your electronics from being overpowered by unstable power grids in some countries.
  • The retractable pins don't catch against other items when packed in luggage.
  • The universal travel power adapter should still be of use domestically as a USB charger.
  • Changes shape to Types A/B, E/F, G and I plugs so should work with a Kuwaiti power outlet.

Disadvantages of a universal travel power adapter

  • A universal travel power adapter will overload when used with a high powered electrical appliance such as clothes irons, microwaves, kettles, vacuum cleaners or hair dryers.
  • The pins and other internal moving parts could be fragile on some universal travel adapters making them likely to possibily break.
  • Only provide power to a single appliance.
  • A universal travel power adapter might not be totally universal, adapters might not work in some countries with less common power outlets.
  • Lacking a built in voltage converter will mean it isn't suitable for electrical appliances which aren't 240 volts. [8]
Power Plug Adapters

An easy to use Type G plug adapter

Power Plug Adapters

Benefits of a power plug adapter

  • Bringing a Type G plug adapter will be ideal for Kuwait.
  • Straightforward design makes this power adapter simple to use.
  • Cheap, prices C$10-C$15.
  • Compact and light.

Disadvantages of a power plug adapter

  • Should you plan to visit more than just one country you may need to pack more than one type of plug adapter for other countries.
  • Only changes the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Type G Kuwaiti power outlet and doesn't modify the actual voltage. If your appliance doesn't work with a 240 volt outlet and isn't dual voltage then you will still need to bring a separate voltage converter.
  • A single adapter per device - for every device you'll also need to bring a separate power adapter.
  • Accomodation in Kuwait may only have one wall outlet available, therefore you'll only be capable of powering one device at once.
  • You'll also need to bring a separate domestic USB charger if you need to power any USB device. [3]
Plug Adapter Sets

Plug adapter sets

Plug Adapter Sets

Benefits of a plug adapter set

  • As prices are roughly C$20-C$25 a power adapter set typically works out more economical than purchasing multiple individual power plug adapter types costing almost C$10 each.
  • Covers all eventualities and not just a Kuwaiti power outlet.
  • If you are visiting different countries a plug adapter set is perfect.
  • Set includes Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M and N plugs so should work in Kuwait.

Disadvantages of a plug adapter set

  • Will involve some planning; before any trip you will need to decide which power adapters they'll need, if you don't know every country you'll be visiting you'll need to bring each adapter type along.
  • Lots individual items to bring with you.
  • All remaining plug adapters will be useless.
  • Not every power adapter types are typically included in each set (especially rarer ones), so ensure that your plug adapter set includes one which is compatible in Kuwait.
  • Each adapter only changes the shape of the plug to fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet but not the actual voltage. [9]
Voltage Converters

Larger voltage converters

Voltage Converters

Benefits of a voltage converter

Disadvantages of a voltage converter

  • A voltage converter only converts the 240 volts in Kuwait and won't change the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet, therefore you will still need to bring the correct type of power adapter.
  • The typical size of voltage converters makes them unsuitable for carry-on baggage.
  • Useless when you return from Kuwait.
  • It's usually better value and more practical to buy a dual voltage travel appliance than to purchase an expensive power converter just to power your existing single voltage appliance in Kuwait.
  • Expensive; C$110-C$120.
  • Canadian travellers going to Kuwait will need a voltage converter as the voltage from a Kuwaiti power outlet is 240 volts. [10]

What plug sockets are used in Kuwait?

There are two different types of power outlets used in Kuwait, types G and C with the primary power supply being type G:

  • Plug Type C - You can recognise this wall socket by the 2 circular holes adjacent to each other.
  • Plug Type G - You can identify this power socket by three vertical slots containing plastic shutters in a triangular pattern for live, neutral and ground. [3]

Do Canadian plugs work in Kuwait?

No - a Canadian plug won't work in Kuwait because it won't fit in a Kuwaiti power outlet without the use of a power adapter. The voltage is different therefore use a power converter if your device isn't dual voltage and check that your device is compatible with a 50hz power outlet.

Kuwait

Is the voltage in Kuwait the same as in Canada?

The voltage from a Kuwaiti power outlet is 240 volts, but 120 volts is used in Canada. If your Canadian appliance or charger won't handle dual voltage then you will need to use a power converter for Kuwait which can lower the voltage from a 220-240 volt power outlet to 120 volts.

Kuwait

How do I use a 110 volt appliance in Kuwait?

Use a step down power converter if you wish to use either a 110 volt or 120 volt appliance in Kuwait.

Do I need a portable charger for Kuwait?

A USB power bank for charging cell phones

Do I need a portable charger for Kuwait?

Whilst electrical cuts aren't common and electricity is available to the entire population, travellers should still bring a power bank to recharge their cell phone.

  • During a trip to Kuwait increased use of smart phones for taking pictures, storing calendars, sat nav, social network sharing and streaming videos will syphon off power excessively. Beyond the inconvenience of missed photo opportunities a flat smart phone battery could potentially leave you stranded without sufficient power to make emergency calls or being able to use a satellite navigation app to find your way back to hotel or accommodation. By packing a portable charger lowers that risk as it allows you to power up your smart phone on the move.
  • Bring at least a 10,000mAh portable charger which will store enough energy to power over 3 full charges whilst a 20,000mAh power bank should keep a typical smart phone charged for up to 7 days depending on the model of phone and usage. A mAh rating (milli ampere-hours) shows the capacity of the battery giving an indication of the number of charge cycles the power bank can do, so a higher mAh will be better for travellers.
  • If your laptop has a USB-C charging port then packing a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) that supplies at least 20Wh can be used to recharge your laptop when travelling to Kuwait. Be aware that some airlines won't let you bring power banks on an aircraft that supply 100 Wh of power or more and must not be left in checked-in luggage.
  • Typical consumer portable chargers won't work with high wattage items, but a rechargeable hair dryer or gas hair straighteners are available for travelling.    [4] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]
Does a solar powered charger work in Kuwait?

Solar backpacks are ideal for hot climates

Does a solar powered charger work in Kuwait?

The sunlight in Kuwait will be adequate enough to charge solar power bank dependably, however it needs to be left in strong sunlight in order to produce enough energy for a single charge cycle. This might prove inconvenient to constantly unpack a solar power bank then wait for it to recharge in a sunny area.

  • Instead, the larger cells used on a solar backpack give the bag the ability to create more electricity within a faster period of time, meaning they should perform well in Kuwait.
  • A phone that has been directly plugged into a USB port of a solar backpack can trickle charge the power during sunny spells in Kuwait, but this could be inconvenient to have the phone constantly connected to the bag during the day should it be used frequently. Unlike a handheld solar power bank that requires unpacking facing sunlight, a solar powered backpack is constantly exposed to light so will be topping up a power bank during the day.
  • Even though the climate in Kuwait is suitable, a bag should ideally have a solar cell efficiency of 22% or greater, can generate at least 6 watts of power and be used with a compatible power bank of 10,000mAH or stronger.
  • Unlike normal firm solar cells, the flexible and durable solar panels used in solar powered bags are built to endure scratches and bending. They are found in rucksack, backpack and laptop messenger styles which makes them ideal for domestic, travel and work use.  [4] [17] [18]

Kuwait chargers

What is a USB travel power charger?

A USB travel charger is a dual voltage charger with interchangeable plugs and multiple USB ports, suitable for charging multiple USB powered devices when travelling abroad.

What USB charger do I need for Kuwait?

If travelling with more than just one device the best travel power adapter for Kuwait is a multiple USB adapter which includes compatible plugs like a 4 port USB travel charger. There are two standards of power outlets that Kuwaitis use (G and C) and bringing this ensures that you are covered for both types C and G. As these types of chargers are supplied with interchangeable pins and can handle from 100 - 240 volts will mean that you can travel to multiple countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa simply by switching the included heads. If your type of device can support Fast Charge then you will benefit from faster recharging times with one of these USB travel chargers along with additional support for certain power hungry devices like tablets. Having a 4 port adapter will also allow you to power multiple devices at the same time without needing to buy seperate power adapters on your Kuwaiti trip or using up additional wall outlets. Only needing to bring a single lightweight travel charger will keep the overall size down, making it perfect to fold up in hand baggage while travelling and on hand for charging your devices at the airport or on a flight. Because of their flexibility these types of power chargers can be used when back at home not just abroad so when you're not travelling they can be used under your bedside table charging multiple phones, tablets and e-readers without using up an additional wall outlet.

We suggest searching for this type of versatile power charger at your preferred electronics retailer; the multipurpose power charger illustrated below is the 4 Port USB Wall Charger which has been tested successfully for powering multiple USB devices in numerous foreign countries on a daily basis. [6]

What USB charger do I need for Kuwait?

Why use a travel USB charger for Kuwait?

  • Typically travel USB chargers include multiple USB charger ports, this means that you should only need to bring one charger to charge multiple devices. Instead of bringing 4 separate power chargers you only need to pack one 4 port USB wall charger to power up to 4 devices, thereby reducing the size and weight of your baggage.
  • Travel USB chargers should include swappable plug heads for various countries thereby making them suitable if visiting other countries across Asia which are likely to use a different standard to Kuwait.
  • Good USB travel chargers are rugged, lightweight and compact; ideal for rigors of travel instead of than risking bringing along a domestic charger which might be impossible to repair or replace in Kuwait.
  • USB chargers will accept both the 240 volts used in Kuwait power outlets plus different voltage standards in other countries.
  • There is a chance that some hotel bedrooms or accommodation in Kuwait might only have one power outlet, by using a travel charger with multiple USB ports means you can share the single wall outlet with family or other traveler instead of waiting to charge each device one by one.
  • Because of their versatile nature a travel USB charger takes the worry out of travelling to any unknown country as they are guaranteed to work practically anywhere on the planet.
  • Power outlets in airports are often in short supply and the demand for charging multiple cell phones before a flight can be high, therefore a USB travel charger with multiple ports and the ability to charge quickly is perfect.
  • Sometimes the power grid in a country can be unstable, a travel USB charger allows for unexpected surges and prevents damage to any devices attached to it. Attempting to repair an overloaded smartphone in Kuwait could prove to be problematic and expensive.
  • Premium USB travel chargers also incorporate a power outlet strip to allow you to power low wattage devices such as laptops, however these are unsuitable for high wattage domestic such as hair dryers or clothes irons. See the section on using travel appliances in Kuwait for useful guidelines and advice on the best power adapter for a high wattage devices with a Kuwaiti power outlet.
  • Certain cell phones could pull more than the normal 500 milliamps produced from a standard 5 volt USB adapter to charge or provide fast charge. More expensive USB chargers will support fast charging should any of your devices require additional power.
  • When back at home travel USB chargers can still be used by charging multiple cell phones every night using only one power outlet. [6]

What is the best USB charger for Kuwait?

A 4 port USB travel charger is the most compact option for travellers from around the world who only have USB devices, but for those also wishing to use their domestic plugs these power strips provide larger but more versatile solutions. All 3 power adapters offer surge protection which is crucial for visitors of counties with unreliable power grids. These travel adapters come with interchangeable type C, I and G plugs covering both Kuwait and over 150 countries around the world:

This versatile power strip is compatible with both American plugs and popular plug types A, D,E/F, G, H, I, L and N making it ideal for a majority of travellers from around the world visiting Kuwait. [6]

Power converters for Kuwait

What does a power converter for Kuwait do?

A power converter enables travellers to use a 100-120 volt electrical appliance with a 240 volt Kuwaiti power outlet.

Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.

What is the difference between a plug adapter and a power converter?

A heavy and expensive power converter will transform the voltage of 240 volts from a Kuwaiti power outlet to work with a non-240 volt appliance, however a smaller and more lightweight power adapter (or plug adapter) will change the shape of the plug on your appliance to slot into a power outlet found in Kuwait. [19]

Do I need a power converter for Kuwait?

If you are visiting Kuwait from a different region please make sure your device can accept a 240 volt power supply.

  • A step down power converter is needed if you are travelling from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your appliance is incompatible with 240 volts. See our world power outlets page to see which voltage your country uses.
  • You don't need a power converter if you are already using either a 240 volt device or one that is dual voltage.
  • Devices which are designed for a lower voltage such as 120 volts and used with 240 volts run the potential risk of an electrical fire hazard, blowing a fuse or damage to your device.
  • You shouldn't need a power converter if you need to charge a smaller electrical device such as a mobile phone as these are typically dual voltage and designed for international use, however you should always check the device for dual voltage support prior to your journey.
  • When powering appliances which draw more power or generate heat (for example clothes irons and hair straighteners) then you will need to use a bulkier higher wattage heavy duty power converter.
  • It should be more cost effective to purchase a smaller robust dual voltage travel appliance than paying for a much heavier high wattage power converter simply to use your existing domestic appliance.
  • Read our comprehensive travel guides on travelling with clothes irons, curling wands, flat irons and hair dryers with a Kuwaiti power outlet , along with recommendations for affordable dual voltage alternatives.  [10] [20]

Do I need a power converter if I'm travelling to Kuwait from Canada?

The voltage from a plug outlet in Kuwait is different to a US supply so bring a if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage.

Kuwait

What kind of converter do I need for Kuwait?

You need to use a step down power converter in order to use any 100, 110 or 120 volt appliance in Kuwait. [10]

What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Voltage converter

What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:

  • Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
  • Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
  • Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
  • Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
  • Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
  • Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
  • Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.

How to convert 240 volts to 110 volts

  1. Use a step down power converter to allow you to use a 110 or 120 volt appliance with a 240 volt Kuwaiti power outlet.
  2. If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for Kuwait before plugging that into a Kuwaiti power outlet.
  3. Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
  4. Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with a 240 volt Kuwaiti power outlet. [10]

Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

Dual voltage hair dryer

Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

A simple method to tell if your appliance is dual voltage is to check for either a sticker or numbers printed on the existing charger, or on the unit itself, typically near to where the power cord plugs into. This location might vary depending on the make or model of your device, it could also state in the instruction manual or on the box.

  • Single voltage devices could say a specific number - such as 120V.
  • Single voltage devices could also have a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
  • Dual voltage devices will normally say a larger voltage range separated with a slash - such as 110/240V.

Are you only planning on charging USB devices?

  • Should you only plan on packing USB electronics such as phones and tablets then it is recommended to just pack a travel USB wall charger.
  • If you only use a simple power plug adapter then you will still need to pack the USB power charger that came with your device too. [6]

How many power outlets will be available when you get to Kuwait?

  • A hotel may have only one power outlet on the wall. This will present an issue if recharging the batteries of multiple electronic devices such as cell phones, tablet computers and laptops overnight as you'll only be able to charge one device at a time.
  • If you wish to charge multiple devices at the same time then we recommend using a travel power strip or travel USB wall charger which can power multiple USB ports or outlets. [7]

How much can you afford?

  • A cheap power adapter starts from around under C$10 which powers only one device in Kuwait (providing that it is dual voltage or is compatible with 240 volts) but investing in roughly C$25-C$30 allows you to power multiple devices at once and bring them to various countries.

Are you flying long haul to get to Kuwait?

  • If you are embarking on an extended flight to get to Kuwait think about a convenient airport-suitable charger that works in different power outlet types, one which can be carried in hand luggage and can be used to top up tablets and phones.
  • Because not all airlines have power outlets available we recommend using a travel portable charger which will recharge on the go. When you land in Kuwait you may need to use a cellphone for making a call, using mapping or reading itineraries; so please make sure that your phone has enough battery power remaining. [4]

Do you still need use your charger when returning to Canada?

Are you visiting other countries with good access to electricity?

  • The power in Kuwait is generally stable however if you want to go to another country you might need an adapter which will protect your appliances. Voltage might occasionally fluctuate in some countries which could potentially cause damage to your devices, so use a power adapter which has surge protection such as a travel power strip.
  • Using a portable charger and a solar backpack will prepare you for travelling to countries with limited electricity or any power cuts.  [4] [4] [17]
